Holidays for July 19th 2013

National Daiquiri Day

It’s National Daiquiri Day! The daiquiri is a rum-based cocktail invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox. Legend has it that Cox created the first daiquiri in the early 1900s after he ran out of gin at a small bar in Santiago, Cuba.
The original daiquiri recipe called for white rum, lime juice, and sugar. According to another legend, Ernest Hemingway inspired the creation of the frozen variety at El Floridita in Havana in the 1940s. The bartender’s name was Constantino Ribalaigua and he is often considered the true creator of the daiquiri. Today, there are dozens of daiquiri flavors and varieties!
To celebrate National Daiquiri Day, share a round of these delicious cocktails with your friends! Mix them up at home or look out for drink specials at your local bar. Cheers!

National Flitch Day

A flitch is a measurement of bacon, now called a slab. Dating back to the early 1100s, a couple who had been married and faithful to one another for at least a year and a day could take home a flitch of bacon on July 19. The couple had to stand mock trial and confess that they still loved one another and had been faithful in their marriage in front of a jury of their peers. After reciting the pledge, they literally could “bring home the bacon”.
Flitch Trails are still held every four years in Great Dunmow, England. Couples must convince a local jury made of six bachelors and six bachelorettes that they do not regret being married. If they are successful, they receive a flitch of bacon and are paraded victoriously through the streets.

National Raspberry Cake Day

National Raspberry Cake Day makes today as sweet as a summer day can be. Tender raspberries are among the best of fruits that nature has to offer. Put them into a cake......Then, you can "have your fruit and eat it, too!"
Raspberries are one of summers sweet, fruity treats. And, the harvest is going on right now. So, it's only appropriate that we enjoy a piece of raspberry cake in celebration of the harvest.
Here is our three step recipe for a perfect National Raspberry Cake Day:
1.       Go out to a "pick your own" farm and pick them fresh. Bring the kids along.
2.       Bake fresh  raspberries into a cake (or two).
3.       Eat some raspberry cake with family and friends.

New Friends Day

Old friends may be invaluable, but new friends are a welcome bonus as well. July 19th celebrates novel acquaintances. It's New Friends Day.
Why not reach out to a new neighbor or friend on July 19th? Introduce yourself. Who knows? You might even make a new friend on New Friends Day.

Stick Out Your Tongue Day

How many parents and teachers have reminded youngsters not to stick out their tongues? Maybe sticking out one's tongue is rude for 364 days of the year, but this facial expression is much more commonplace on July 19th.

Just say, "Ah-ah!" July 19th is Stick Out Your Tongue Day.
